Who it is for
Who can participate?
Eaglets programs are built for students in grades 3 through 8. Some programs are open to anyone; others are limited to a particular school or district because of how the host runs registration. Every program page states its own grade range and any eligibility limit.
Does my student need robotics experience?
No. Programs are designed for students who have never built or programmed anything before, and campers start by assembling the robot from parts. If a specific program does expect prior experience, its page says so.
Dates, kit, and equipment
Is the camp one day or multiple days?
It depends on the program. Every program page lists each session date individually rather than a vague range, and states whether registration covers the full series. For multi-session camps each session builds on the last, so attending all of them matters.
Is a robot kit provided, and does my student keep it?
We provide the kit, and the student keeps it. That is the point of the design. The robot goes home so the learning can continue after the camp ends, and we publish a manual with further projects and troubleshooting for exactly that reason. Every kit and every material is included; families are never asked to buy anything.
Does my student need a laptop?
No. We provide a laptop for each student during the session. Bring nothing. The tools, parts, and printed materials are all supplied.
What happens after I register?
You will get a confirmation from the program contact with location details and anything to bring. Submitting a registration form does not by itself guarantee a place, and if a program is at capacity we will tell you and offer the waitlist.
Cost
What does it cost?
Camps hosted in partner communities are free for the students who attend, which is what the grant funding is for. Our sessions at the Allen ISD STEAM Center have carried a $50 enrolment fee covering the robot kit and every supply used. The exact cost is stated on each program page, and where there is no fee the page says so plainly rather than leaving the field blank.
What if $50 is difficult?
Then ask, and we will waive it. Fee waivers are available for families who need them, and we do not require documentation of need on a public form. Cost is not going to be the reason a student misses out. That is the whole premise of the organization, and it would be strange to apply it everywhere except our own registration.
Support and supervision
Can accommodations be requested?
Yes, and the earlier the better. Write to us before you register and we will plan for it. You never need to share a diagnosis or medical records; tell us what support would help and we will arrange it, working with you and with certified teachers where that is useful. The curriculum is hands-on, visual, and instructor-guided by design, which makes most accommodations straightforward to put in place.
Who supervises the program?
Eaglets instructors are students. Adult supervision is provided by the school or organization hosting the program, under their own safety and emergency procedures. Each program page names the host and the adult lead for that program.
About Eaglets
Is this a competition team?
No. Eaglets is an education program: students come to learn how a robot works by building one, not to compete. The program grew out of student robotics work and shares people with it, but joining an Eaglets camp is not joining a competition team.
Who actually teaches the sessions?
High school students. Eaglets members design the kit, write the curriculum, and teach the programs themselves, with adult oversight from the host site. You do not have to take our word for it: the national executive director of BEST Robotics told a television reporter covering one of our camps that the camps are created by the Allen students, who do all of the curriculum and all of the teaching. The arrangement is deliberate. A nine-year-old watching someone a few years older debug a circuit takes a much shorter route to "I could do that".
What does my student actually learn?
The sequence starts further back than most people expect. Before any code is written, campers work through what electricity is, why a circuit has to close, what a resistor does, and how a breadboard connects things underneath. Programming follows once the robot exists and there is something to control. By the end, students program the robot to drive a set distance, draw with a marker, and use its distance sensor to decide when to turn inside a maze.
